National Underwriting Manager

Job Description

  • Makes superior customer service a prime goal of the department.
  • Keeps current on any changes by the agencies and adjusts guidelines as needed based on these changes.
  • Provide suggestions to Product Development Committee for enhancements and/or restrictions to guidelines (keeping in mind overall credit risk).
  • Assists Staff Underwriters and Lead Underwriters with questions and concerns on files. Considers (on a very limited basis) exceptions to printed guidelines.
  • Assists on 2nd reviews for files slated to be declined.
  • Develops training materials and provides training to staff and clients.
  • Conducts monthly conference calls with underwriting staff to discuss updates and/or concerns. Interviews and hires underwriting staff.
  • Oversees Processing and consults with the VP of that sector concerning their staffing and training needs.
  • Coordinate the workflow between processors and underwriters to produce a streamline file flow with enhanced communication.
  • Woks with Quality Control Department to determine trends and training needs.
  • Develops Underwriting VP & AVP’s to be able to handle much of the day-to-day operation of the dept.
  • Sits on various committees to provide underwriting perspective as it relates to overall company goals.
  • Acts as a liaison with other departments to ensure smooth flow of files though our system.
  • Monitor reports to determine productivity and quality of employee output.
  • Ensures loans are underwritten in accordance with company policy and in a compliant manner.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

  • Superior ability to analyze mortgage credit files. Includes review of income streams and determination of income stability. Analysis of assets used to qualify. Alert as to any potential red flags in file that may indicate fraud. Determination of an acceptable credit profile. Review of appraisals to determine adequate and acceptable collateral.
  • Analyze agency guidelines and regulatory requirements to ensure that closed loans meet requirements of the secondary market.
  • Communication skills necessary to produce readily understandable training materials and the ability to conduct informed training as needed for staff and clients. Ability to effectively communicate across department line and with clients. The ability to handle delicate situations with diplomacy and tact.
  • Reasonable computer skills are needed to perform essential duties. As a paperless system, files are reviewed, research is conducted, and approvals and denials are all completed via computer. Monitoring of reports are essential in review of productivity and quality of employee output.
  • Must be organized and able to maintain structure in the department. Ability to prioritize work requirements and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to interview and hire qualified staff.
  • Mentor VP & AVP’s to develop into strong managers to be able to handle day to day operations in the department.
  • Good decision-making skills that are backed by relevant detail and research.
  • Produce a climate of superior customer service for both external and internal clients.
  • Act as a liaison to with other departments to promote good working relationship among staff.
  • Works closely with Product Development in developing enhancements and/or restrictions to current posted guidelines.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Underwriting Manager oversees all the underwriting staff (includes Underwriting Assistants, Staff Underwriters, Lead Underwriters, Asst VP’s in Underwriting) as well as all processing staff (including VP, AVP and Processors).

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, and individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. The candidate must possess a good working knowledge of all regulatory requirements pertaining to the job function, including, but not limited to, BSA/AML, the U.S. Patriot Act, and privacy laws.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Requires a broad knowledge of the overall mortgage environment with primary focus in Mortgage Underwriting. May require course work or experience equivalent to a related degree and 10+ years of underwriting experience. Experience in managing employees in both a direct office environment as well as remote.

Language Skills:

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as Agency Guidelines, Regulatory Requirements, and Company Policy. Skill in effective communication with other employees, staff, and clients.

Mathematical Skills:

  • Good operating knowledge of personal and business tax returns. Ability to interpret the math adjustments used in the appraisal of properties. Skills in reviewing financial statements and the review of budgets.

 

Reasoning Abilities:

  • Good analytical ability, superior reasoning skills.

 

Physical Demands:
