ROLE OVERVIEW:
The Trust Officer is responsible for managing and administering a complex book of fiduciary relationships - primarily personal trusts, estates, IRAs, custody, escrow, and related accounts. In this role you will lead client relationships, exercise fiduciary discretion with sound judgment, mitigate risk, and partner across the wealth management team to deliver integrated solutions and grow relationships.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Apply deep technical expertise to administer complex trusts and exercise fiduciary discretion consistent with governing documents, applicable law, and policy.
• Serve as the primary client contact on all trust matters and own end-to-end administration for each relationship.
• Assess and manage risk across your book of business; escalate issues promptly and adhere to fiduciary policies, procedures, and risk appetite.
• Partner with Fiduciary Wealth Advisors, Portfolio Managers, and Internal Legal Strategists to design and implement trust solutions that meet client goals.
• Identify opportunities to deepen existing relationships and originate new ones through exceptional service and consultative problem-solving.
• Deliver superior client service: understand family dynamics, distribution needs, and long-term objectives; propose practical, document-aligned solutions.
• Coordinate with internal partners (Market Leadership, Fiduciary Leadership, Legal Compliance) to resolve issues, deliver timely service, and expand relationships.
• Lead the new-account process: review and validate documents; ensure proper funding; open accounts with correct coding for statements, proxies, investments, and tax; confirm beneficiary data; secure fee agreements; and monitor terminations and distributions through closure.
• Conduct ongoing account oversight: cash management, distributions, approvals, overdrafts, bill payments, and exception clearing; troubleshoot and resolve discrepancies.
• Prepare and present discretionary requests to the Wealth Management Committee, document rationales and outcomes.
• Oversee periodic administrative and investment reviews; collaborate with Portfolio Managers to confirm alignment with trust terms and client objectives.
• Maintain regular contact with current and remainder beneficiaries; educate stakeholders and capture future business opportunities.
• Support market growth: join client/prospect meetings as a subject-matter expert; contribute to proposals and presentations.
• Serve as a fiduciary resource and mentor to Fiduciary Wealth Advisors, Associate Fiduciary Wealth Advisors and Client Service Associates, model best practices and support training.
• Stay current on federal and state trust/estate law, tax developments, and industry standards; implement changes into practice.
• Uphold internal control standards; remediate audit and exam findings on time and document corrective actions.
• Promote an inclusive, client-first culture that reflects the United Bank’s brand and values.
• Complete other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor’s degree required, Juris Doctor (JD) or Master’s degree preferred.
• Minimum seven (7) years administering fiduciary accounts or related legal/business experience in financial services, including technical trust and planning work.
• CTFA (Certified Trust and Financial Advisor) or Ability to attain Certified Trust and Financial Advisor certification (CTFA) within one year of employment required.
• Strong interpersonal skills.
• Ability to present situations and resolutions effectively.
• Ability to travel as business needs arise, some travel may require overnight stay.
• Ability to read and interpret legal documents.
• Excellent oral and written and communication skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office products
• Ability to provide attentive and compassionate client service.
• Ability to represent the Bank in a professional manner consistently.
• Strong organizational skills and detail oriented
• Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
